Internet marketing gurus provide a lot of valuable content to help you build a successful business. But there are some pitfalls you have to avoid.
In this guide I’ll tell you why you need to avoid expensive products that usually contain advanced strategies.
Then I’ll reveal a simple, easy to implement Internet marketing plan that consists of 5 systems. Proven to build a 5 figure business.
I’ll also tell you about some good motivation and facebook ads gurus.
Back in 2004 when I started there were only a handful of well known gurus, like Mike Filsaime, Russell Brunson, Corey Rudl and Yanik Silver.
Internet Business was still a new thing, especially the Information business (selling information products like ebooks, video courses, etc).
To succeed you had to do a lot of trial and error type of thing, all by yourself.
You can look at the table of contents below to get a better idea about the contents of this guide.
A lot of the popular Internet marketing gurus are teaching (and using in their business) very complex strategies that you shouldn’t even consider.
Those advanced strategies work for them because they have a lot of experience, employees or freelancers, time (to setup & test), money and other resources… that you don’t have, yet.
I’ll give you a perfect example of this in a moment…
You should follow the K.I.S.S. principle, keep it simple, stupid, especially if you’ve just started your online business and you lack experience and skill.
You have to avoid EVERY complex or advanced strategy or technique because if you don’t you’ll end up wasting your time and money, especially on technical things to set the whole thing up and test it.
Everything will be so much easier when you follow that principle.
So let’s see some examples of these advanced strategies, that are practically impossible to utilize for most people.
Ryan Deiss has a $295 course called ‘The Email Marketing Machine’. I bought it (for $97 when they had a discount), took notes, tried to implement it but never used it.
It’s so complex you’ll need to spend months to understand the strategy, and then more weeks or months to actually implement it, especially the technical aspect of it…
If you ever manage to set the whole thing up, then it will be even more complex to understand the data as soon as you test it and start getting traffic and leads.
These advanced strategies that the most popular gurus are using are suitable for the expert marketers, not the beginner.
I built my first list in the ‘anti spyware’ niche. It was my first Internet business, way back in 2007.
So I do have some experience with list building… and yet I still find ‘‘The Email Marketing Machine’ advanced and complex.
Therefore if the particular guru you’ll following has a basic and advanced course on any particular topic always choose the basic course.
Master the basics, before you even think about the more advanced concepts. Follow that advice and you’ll avoid a lot of frustrations, especially with technical problems.
It will be easier to get things done if you start with the basics and keep things as simple as possible.
Anytime you notice you’re spending too much time on a particular strategy or technique without any noticeable progress consider simplifying what you’re doing!
If you’re building a sales funnel all you need is a lead magnet and a one time offer. You don’t have to use downsells, one click upsells, order bumps, thank you wall, etc.
If you try to do that you’ll never finish the sales funnel – you’ll waste your time tweaking, fixing and updating the funnel… and never actually launching it!
Also, if you keep things as simple as possible you’ll be able to understand how well the particular strategy or technique is performing much better (and then make changes to improve your results).
If you’re using Facebook ads you can start with just 1 ad instead of 10. You’ll only have to check how well 1 ad is doing, you’ll have little data to monitor and analyze.
You won’t be confused and you’ll be able to learn, understand and improve your results.
On the other hand if you start with 10 ads you’ll have too much data to analyze. It will be difficult. You won’t be able to understand what’s going on and improve your results.
You might even become so frustrated that you’ll simple give up.
Let’s look at another example of a complicated product from a popular guru…
This guy is famous for using ‘sequences’ in email marketing, where one email leads to another and another.
However his strategies are extremely advanced and tedious to set up for pretty much everybody (apart from the experts).
Here’s a screenshot of an email marketing campaign containing all sorts of sequences.
For example if a subscriber clicks a link in an email they’ll get a specific follow up series, and so on.
I know marketers who are making $50,000 a month or more and they aren’t using any complicated email marketing strategies.
In fact I’ll reveal their strategy further below…
They’re not using stories, sequences, segmentation or any other email marketing trick.
Russell Brunson teaches the soap opera and seinfeld email sequences (apart from many other things), in the DotComSecrets book.
These aren’t ‘copy and paste’ templates, you have to come up with a story, and all of the other elements… and then keep tweaking and testing the series until it actually works.
This is not an easy task, nor is it required to start building and growing a list.
Sure, these advanced strategies from Andre, Russell or other internet marketing gurus work like magic, but only when done right!
With those strategies they are making $100,000 a month or more.
But first you have to master and use the basics, in order to have the experience and skill that’s required to setup those advanced strategies successfully!
This is the strategy you should master, because it’s simple, easy and it works like magic. There are marketers utilizing this exact system and doing $50,000 a month or more.
They’re making all that money from products they promote and sell to their list.
With no stories, no segmentation, no tricks… and all you need is just one list.
The key is to build a positive relationship with your subscribers by delivering valuable content that they’ll find useful.
The full email marketing system is described in my other guide, but here’s a summary.
Aweber is the easiest autoresponder tool and technically speaking it still has the highest deliverability rates.
You can easily follow that system, so you’re not going to get confused. There are no technical challenges that you have to overcome, it’s simple.
You can implement it quickly.
Internet marketing gurus have to email their list regularly, typically every day, because that’s how they build a relationship with their list.
To accomplish that they’ll email you the latest new thing… for example ‘Facebook Messenger Bots’, ‘The Book Funnel’, ‘Order Bumps’, ‘Re targeting’, etc.
For example they tell you they’re getting a ton of new leads by using retargeting ads on Facebook and go on and on about why you should use it.
They tell you how much money they’re making with these strategies or tools, and that you need to start using them right away!!
And they’ll sell you products or services about these new things…
A lot of people have no step by step strategy to build their business, so they’ll buy the latest new thing, hoping this is the thing they really need.
This gurus aren’t doing anything bad. The problem is that the latest thing is usually an advanced strategy or tool (even though they make it sound simple, it’s not).
You have to do and master the basics in order to implement the more advanced tactics successfully.
And so on…
Therefore for most people these emails are a distraction. You have to pay stick to the basics.
Stick to the basics whether you’re building a sales funnel, writing content, making videos, creating products, emailing your list, etc.
Avoid complications, you can implement advanced strategies later on…
Now let’s look at the 5 basic systems you should use right now in your business, so that you have a step by step strategy that you can follow!
You should only care about setting up the following 5 systems in place, before you think about any advanced strategy.
That’s already quite a bit… but it’s as simple as it can get, and it’s easy to implement.
But if you complicate those 5 systems by using advanced strategies for example ‘list segmentation’, a ‘6 step sales funnel’, ‘3 different lists’, ‘complicated stories’, etc., it will halt your progress.
You can waste a lot of time and money especially on technical things.
If you manage to build those 5 systems, and keep testing and refining them until you’re generating new leads every day, and making profit… you’ll be in business!
That’s all you need.
Later on you can scale, and use advanced strategies, you’ll have the experience and skills to do that without going crazy.
Now let’s see what you should do each day once you’ve built those systems.
After you build a) the content website (and start putting in some content), b) the sales funnel and c) at least one product you can follow this daily plan of action.
Those are the strategies that really matters, that’s how you should spend your time, instead of constantly trying the latest new software, technique or tool.
I don’t blame you, because if you don’t know what you should do you’ll keep trying one thing after another.
But now I just told you the 5 systems you should setup, and the daily action plan you should follow.
There are other marketers using those exact methods and they’re making tens of thousands of dollars each month (a five figure business in a niche outside of the Internet Marketing)!
Just because a guru is popular doesn’t mean you need or should buy any of their products.
After you setup the 5 systems I’ve outlined in the Internet Marketing plan above you can invest your money on paid traffic, e.g. Facebook Ads.
That’s a really good use of your money, instead of expensive products or tools that you don’t need.
Let me give you a few examples of such products…
Frank Kern‘s $2997 ‘Mass Control’ product , or the $3997 ‘Client Acquisition System’ are the perfect example of products that will frustrate and confuse you…
If you’re already making a nice income online, then you might take it to the next level with those courses…
But if you’re just getting started those aren’t going to tell you exactly what to do, step by step.
They’re not for beginners.
You can invest that money on paid traffic, e.g. Facebook Ads. In fact you can build that one for practically free.
If your sales funnel is working well, you can improve it further more with downsells, upsells, one click upsells, order bumps, etc.
You may need a software to use those advanced features, and there are far cheaper options than Clickfunnels e.g. PayKickStart starting at $29.95/mo.
Neil teaches mainly SEO but once again SEO shouldn’t interest you the least bit unless you’re already creating content on your website on a regular basis.
And even then, you can use much easier SEO tactics that are still proven to get you results… instead of the more advanced tactics that require a lot of time to understand and implement!
SEO a long term strategy, you may need at least 50 SEO optimized content pages in order to start getting any traffic from Google.
Rely on paid traffic in order to get a reliable and consistent supply of traffic! Further below I recommend some Facebook Ads gurus.
Neil Patel also has Crazy Egg, which will tell you where your visitors are clicking or scrolling on your website.
You’d be crazy to pay $24-$49/mo for that one.
That tool is useful for someone who gets at least 50,000 visitors to their website every month.
If you’re only getting between 1000 – 5000 visitors you won’t see any meaningful data that’s going to make a real difference in your business.
Once again that money is better used on a paid traffic source, so that you start building and growing your list.
Dan Kennedy – if you haven’t, you’ll hear about him sooner or later. But he’s not an expert on Internet Marketing.
His marketing strategies work well for offline small businesses, but they’re absolutely not practicable for an online business.
There are no step by step strategies for online businesses, you can learn a lot yet don’t know how to actually implement it. It’s like a solving a 20,000 piece jigsaw puzzle.
Therefore you don’t have to spend $49.95 every month for his GKIC membership, nor do you have to attend any of the seminars or purchase his more expensive home study courses.
However he’s also very famous for his copywriting skills, and his book, ‘The Ultimate Sales Letter’ is a good one. I do have a copy.
Those are just some of the Internet marketing gurus’ products that aren’t appropriate for you… unless you’re already making at least $5,000 a month or more and want to take it to the next level!
Now here are some good Facebook Ads gurus that can help you drive traffic to your sales funnel, so you start building your list!
A sales funnel is just a series of webpages (a minimum of 3) designed specifically to build your list.
These are some gurus I personally follow and recommend if you’re going to use Facebook Ads as your paid traffic generation platform.
Miles Beckler – this guy will show you how to run Facebook ads with just $5 per day, and scale it up.
Kim Roach – She may not be as famous as the other gurus, but sometimes that’s exactly what you want.
You want to learn from people who are making $10,000 or $20,000 a month because they’re using strategies that you can use.
Whoever is making between $50,000 to $100,000 a month or more is using advanced strategies, and that’s what they’ll teach you.
Those strategies aren’t appropriate for beginners who aren’t making at least between $1000 to $5,000 a month.
Here’s one of her videos revealing a “Super Quick Tip for 10-Minute Lead Magnets…”
The Internet Marketing Plan that I’ve outlined above is basic and simple, but it’s still a lot of work. You’d still have to spend several years in order to start seeing any really good results.
That’s why you might need to follow some motivation and self development gurus, sooner or later.
My favorite is Dan Pena.
I like Dan Pena because he’s got a special kind of energy that can really motivate you. He doesn’t tell you the nice, kind things you want to hear. He’ll tell you what you need to hear, whether you’ll like it or not!
Some motivation gurus send you nice quotes in your inbox everyday… and that’s okay.
But I think, if you need some serious motivation and develop real lasting change in yourself, you need something a bit more aggressive, someone like Dan Pena.
Watch this full interview to get to some really good advice…
Some of the other self development or motivation gurus I follow (by that I mean I’m on their list, or follow their Facebook page or Youtube channel, and I’ve read one or two of their books) include Brendon Burchard, Brian Tracy, Jack Canfield, Bob Proctor and Tony Robbins.
And of course there are more, you have to follow the gurus you’re drawn to.
The most important message I hope you understand is that you can build a successful business without buying any expensive products or using advanced strategies!
You want easy, step by step strategies that aren’t too technically difficult to implement, otherwise they’ll never get done.
The appropriate strategy is outlined in the ‘Internet Marketing Plan’ above. There are successful marketers, earning thousands of dollars every month using just the basics.
It’s proven, not theory.
You can use the more advanced, sophisticated and technically challenging strategies after you’ve gained more experience and skill, to take your business to the next level.
But until you’re making at least between $1000 to $5000 a month you don’t have to waste your time or money on any of that.
So which are your favorite Internet marketing gurus? Let us know in the comments.
More than 7 years ago Jack made his first few sales online as an affiliate marketer. His site ranked on Google for dozens of keywords, so later on, he built courses and software to teach his SEO “secrets”.
He also won a Flip Camera in an affiliate contest.
Now he reveals all the insights he’s discovered throughout the years about Internet marketing, in his free guides and products!
